Electronic cigarettes are becoming more and more popular around the world. They are safer and cheaper than tobacco cigarettes but we’re sure you have many questions about the product. We sincerely hope this FAQ section will give you all the information you need to know about electronic cigarettes.

What is an Electronic Cigarette?

An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is an electrical device that provides users with a safer product over traditional cigarettes. Unlike tobacco cigarettes they do not contain tar and the other 4000+ chemicals.

Electronic cigarettes were first developed by the Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik, who patented his idea in 2003. Three years later the electronic cigarette was introduced to Europe and the USA.

You do not need to light an electronic cigarette. Instead it contains a small amount of liquid (e-liquid) that is heated thus producing vapour rather than smoke, this is why those using e-cigarettes are said to be ‘vaping’ rather than smoking. There are no fire hazard risks or second-hand smoke issues.

How do they work?

An e-cigarette consists of a battery, a cartridge/clearomiser and E-liquid. Depending on the type used, when the user either inhales or pushes the battery button on their e-cigarette it converts the e-liquid contained in the cartridge/clearomiser into a vapour which is then inhaled by the user.

Does the vapour smell?

The vapour produced is odourless and dissipates within seconds. There is definitely not the problem that is caused by tobacco cigarettes and the worry about clothes smelling doesn’t happen with e-cigarettes. You will also not get a ‘smokers breath’.

How do I know when my E-cigarette battery needs charging?

The tip flashing or the push button flashing is a low power warning indicating that the lithium battery needs to be recharged.

How do you charge an E-Cigarette Battery?

E-cigarette batteries can be recharged conveniently using a USB port or with a wall charger.

How long will a battery take to charge?

For most models, an initial charging time of eight hours is recommended. For subsequent charging of the battery, it usually takes between one and two hours. It is not recommended that you either use a different charger or leave the battery on charge overnight.

How do I know when my battery is fully charged?

Your charger will contain an LED indicator which will change from red to green (or different depending on manufacturer). When you start charging the battery the colour will be red, when it is fully charged, this will turn to green (or different depending on manufacturer).

Why do I need spare batteries?

Lithium batteries have a relatively short life of two to three months. It is therefore important that you have spare batteries. If you enjoy vaping a lot then it is also handy to have spares so you never run out of power, you can have one on charge while you vape with the other.

Why is my battery not working?

This could be because the battery either needs to be charged or it is in the safety mode. Most manufacturers have a 5 click feature to turn the battery on/off for safety.

How to tell if your battery is faulty?

If your battery is faulty then your e-cigarette may not be able to perform its duties. For example, the LED indicator on the tip/battery may not change from green to red or flash to indicate the battery has connected to the charger. It may also result in there being no vapour created when you inhale on the e-cigarette.

My battery won’t charge?

If this is the case you need to check that you are using the correct charger for your battery. You also need to check that you are charging your battery correctly. Some are charged via the top connection (510/eGo charger) while others are charged from the bottom via a micro USB. Mods that take external batteries require an external charger for the battery cells.

What are Clearomisers?

Clearomisers do not have any filler material and consist of a metal tube that extends up the shaft. Fiber wicks extend from an atomizing coil and soak up e-liquid taking it to the heating coil. There are several different types, some of which are disposable. On average clearomisers last two to three weeks. Replacing a coil is more cost effective than replacing the whole unit so it is always best to go for a rebuildable clearomiser.

Do I need to change the Clearomiser?

Rebuildable clearomisers can be used again and again and you simply top them up with e-liquid. It is recommended though that you change the coils at least once a fortnight. This ensures a nice clean vape.

What are Cartomizers?

Initially, e-cigarettes were made up of three parts – the battery, an atomizer and a cartridge filled with e-liquid. The principle was simple and effective but had some flaws. These included leaks occurring when using or refilling the cartridge.

A solution to these problems came about when the atomizer and cartridge were combined into one single unit. This was called the cartomizer, the name being a mixture of cartridge and atomizer. The cartomizer has made the e-cigarette more user-friendly as it eliminates the previous task of pouring e-liquids into the cartridge and assembling their vaporizer. Pre-filled cartomizers can just be screwed onto the battery quite easily.

The cartomizer consists of a metal or plastic casing which includes a single or dual coil atomizer wrapped in polyfill material which absorbs the e-liquid. They can hold a generous amount of e-liquid and are very affordable.

What is contained in the E-Liquid?

The e-liquid, also known as e-juice, consists of several ingredients. This includes nicotine, the strength of which can be varied. Other ingredients include Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycol.

What is propylene glycol?

Propylene glycol is an odourless, colourless and slightly sweet organic binding agent. Research has showed that it is safe for human inhalation over long periods of time and has been classified as GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe). It does not represent a cancer hazard.

What is vegetable Glycol and is it harmful to me?

Vegetable glycol is a carbohydrate that is normally sourced from plant oils. It can be found in many products including toothpaste. It helps to produce more vapour and holds more flavour because it is thicker in consistency.

Why does the e-liquid in my clearomiser/tank change colour?

Some e-liquids change colour when exposed to air and light, a well used coil unit can also cause discolouration. This is perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about at all.

Is nicotine harmful?

Nicotine is not a known carcinogenic and links to health issues are mostly inconclusive. It is addictive but the levels in e-cigarettes are well below the legally permissible limit. Unlike in tobacco cigarettes you can vary the amount of nicotine contained in your e-cigarette and some do not contain any nicotine.

How long does a 10ml bottle of E-Liquid last?

A 10ml bottle should last approximately five to seven days for an average user.

Do Electronic Cigarettes save you money?

They most definitely do. The price of e-cigarettes is a lot cheaper than the ever-increasing in price tobacco cigarettes.

Where can I use my electronic cigarette?

At present e-cigarettes are not covered by the laws that prohibit smoking in public places. Some venues do prohibit the use of e-cigarettes on their premises claiming that they resemble too closely the act of smoking a tobacco cigarette.

Can e-cigarettes be used as a way of giving up smoking?

There have been several studies that have shown how e-cigarettes can be used as a tool for smoking cessation. Tests have seen e-cigarettes fare favourably with other tools such as nicotine patches. Robert West, director of tobacco research at University College London, has determined that e-cigarettes could be a valuable public health tool. He said: “It's early days but so far it seems that these devices are already helping tens of thousands of smokers to stop each year."
