What is an intermediate vape kit?

It hasn’t proved to be an easy task to divide the available vape kits neatly into our beginner, intermediate and advanced categories. Every vape kit is that little bit different from the next and the hardware varies dramatically in terms of style, features and functionality. What feels simple and straightforward to one vaper might be too complex for another. For this reason, you will find that certain kits appear in more than one of the categories we have created.

We have given the concept of intermediate vape kits a considerable amount of thought. For us, a beginner kit is a simple device with single button operation, one output mode and high resistance coils. The kits we have characterised as advanced offer multiple modes and powerful outputs. They demand greater input from the user and incorporate a screen. Intermediate devices fall somewhere between these two extremes. However, there are grey areas here and so we recommend that you read the product descriptions for each kit. These will enlighten you as to how straightforward the devices are and which features they incorporate.

The kits we have identified as intermediate keep things relatively simple, but many offer a second operating mode, higher wattage outputs than beginner kits and/or a broader choice of coils. Some of these devices enable you to try sub ohm vaping without complex settings to deal with while others are more simple variable wattage e cigs for mouth to lung vaping.

Vape pen, box mod or pod system?

In the early days of the vaping revolution, the choice of hardware was extremely limited. Devices were restricted to cigalikes, simple vape pens and box mods aimed at advanced users. But things are very different now. It is possible to find complex vape pens and user-friendly box mods. You can also explore the newest kids on the block, pod systems, ad these also vary dramatically in their complexity.

Vape pens

Vape pens are the most popular choices with vapers. They are relatively compact devices featuring cylindrical batteries and compatible tanks of the same diameter. Most of our intermediate vape pens take things a little further than fixed wattage outputs. Some, such as the SMOK Stick R22, support both mouth to lung and sub ohm vaping. Others give you variable wattage, or as with the Vaporesso Sky Solo Plus, automatic coil recognition.

Pod systems

Pod devices feature plastic pods to hold your e liquid instead of glass tanks. The pods may be prefilled with e liquid or refillable and some feature replaceable coils. To complicate matters a little, some pod systems are also vape pens! For instance, the Vaporesso GTX GO 80 is a pod pen! The first pod systems that came to market were fixed, low wattage devices. But you can now invest in a pod system with variable wattage, powerful outputs and sub ohm capability.

Box mod kits

These kits feature a box mod and compatible tank. Box mods are so named for their boxy appearance and they tend to offer both greater functionality and bigger batteries than vape pens. But there are box mod kits with plenty of oomph that won’t bamboozle relatively inexperienced vapers. The Innokin CoolFire Z50 Zlide Vape Kit delivers outputs of up to 50W and supports both MTL and sub ohm vaping and yet remains user-friendly.

How to choose your intermediate vape kit

We recommend that you think carefully about which features and functionality you want now or may want to try in the near future. You should also ask yourself how confident you are about mastering complex settings. There’s no point purchasing a kit that boasts features you will never use as you will be paying for that additional functionality. Our product descriptions will give you a good idea of what to expect from each device. You can compare the various benefits of the available hardware and then make your decision. Here are the aspects of vaping hardware that you should consider:

·         Battery capacity – the bigger the battery, the longer the vape time you get between charging. Battery size is a more important consideration if you vape sub ohm as low resistance coils drain your battery at a faster rate.

·         Charging speed – USB-C capability will enable you to charge your device in double quick time.

·         Functionality – the more operating modes and settings a device features, the harder it will be to learn how to use it.

·         Coil resistance – are you content with mouth to lung vaping or would you like to try sub ohm vaping? Some devices only enable you to vape one way or the other, others enable you to switch between the two vaping styles.

·         Coil compatibility – if you would like to switch between vaping styles or experiment to find your sweet spot, look for a device that is compatible with multiple coils.

·         Style – if you favour certain looks or colours, choose a device that suits your personal style.

·         Size – the larger the device, the less convenient it will be to carry around with you.

·         Durability – if you like adventuring in the great outdoors or you are just plain clumsy, seek out shockproof and waterproof devices.

·         Cost – settle upon your budget then choose a device that you can comfortably afford to buy. Don’t forget to factor in the cost of replacement coils.

·         E-liquids – devices compatible with multiple coils enable you to benefit from a broader choice of e liquids.

Hardware safety

Always bear in mind that today’s e cigs have numerous safety protections that will prevent you from making a dangerous mistake. As such, you have little to fear from choosing a more complex device that might take you a little longer to get to grips with. It won’t let you blow yourself up and you could discover new aspects of vaping that you really enjoy.
