How to Make Your Vape Coils Last Longer

How to Make Your Vape Coils Last Longer

Are you interested in reducing the cost of vaping?

The longevity of your coils will impact your vaping budget and so ensuring they last for longer will save you money.

If the idea of conserving your cash is an appealing one, it is worth doing everything you can to look after your coils, whether they are replaceable coils or those built-in to your pods.

Why Do Vape Coils Burn Out?

No coil will last forever and the primary reason that coils give up the ghost is that they have burnt out. There are several reasons why vape coils eventually burn out:

  • When you vape, the e-liquid that you use leaves residue behind. The popular sweetener sucralose is particularly notorious for leaving a dark, sticky residue that looks and tastes like burned sugar. It will eventually ruin your coils.
  • The more e-liquid you use, the greater the amount of residue that will be left behind. Today’s vape coils are capable of vaporising an unbelievably large amount of e-liquid. Some people use more than 10 ml of vape juice per day.
  • The hotter your coil becomes during operation, the more likely the wick is to burn. Today’s vape coils are often designed to operate at very high wattages.
  • If you vape until your tank is completely empty, the wicking will dry out and burn. Once that happens, your coil is done.
  • All coils should be primed before use, otherwise the wicking will burn as soon as you fire your device.

How to Prevent Burn-Out

1. Switch to Unsweetened E-Liquid

Sucralose is a common cause of coil burn-out. Sucralose doesn’t convert completely to an aerosol when it’s heated; a portion of it sticks to your atomizer coil as a result. This residue eventually starts to burn, creating a horrible taste. If you use unsweetened e-liquid, you’ll find that your coils last much longer.

2. Always Prime Your Coils

It’s incredibly important that you prime coils before firing your device. Priming is the process of soaking a coil's wicking with e-liquid. A burned wick ruins a coil forever.

3. Keep Your Tank Topped Up

Have you ever noticed that, when your vape tank starts to get a bit low on juice, the e-liquid no longer completely covers the coil’s wick openings? That’s the reason why some vape tanks have minimum fill lines. If e-liquid doesn't cover the openings, the wicking could become too dry and it will then burn.

4. Moderate Your Wattage

Using a device with variable wattage adds a great deal of flexibility to your vaping experience. But small adjustments in your outputs can help to preserve your coils. The recommended outputs for coils are guidelines and are not cast in stone. It's worth taking things down a notch as your coils will reach lower temperatures, lengthening the amount of time it will take them to start burning e-liquid residue and reducing the possibility of burning the wicking.

5. Take Shorter Puffs

The longer your puffs, the more e-liquid that is vaporised, thereby raising the risk of wicking drying out. Shorter puffs will enable your wicking to continually absorb sufficient juice.

6. Choose Higher Resistance Coils

One important thing to remember about coil life is that two of the primary factors that cause a coil to burn out quickly – the amount of e-liquid you use and the heat of the coil itself – are largely mitigated if you use a smaller vaping device such as a pod system.

Companies have added sweeteners to their e-liquids almost as long as vaping has existed. Short coil life has only recently come to light as a major issue because of the amount of e-liquid people use today. If you enjoy using sweetened e-liquid and don’t want to switch to a different flavour, you might want to consider using a lower-wattage vaping device such as a pod system. You’ll need to increase the nicotine strength of your e-liquid to maintain the same level of satisfaction that you currently enjoy, but the fact that you’ll use significantly less vape juice will mean that your coils will last much longer than they currently do.

7. Avoid Chain Vaping

Taking multiple long puffs back-to-back doesn’t give the wick time to re-saturate. It is best to pause between puffs and to take shorter puffs if you notice your device getting hotter. Chain vaping will severely reduce the lifespan of any coil.

Summary

Coil life impacts both the cost and convenience of vaping. If you are concerned about your finances and/or would welcome not having to change coils or pods quite so frequently, it is worth taking steps to protect your coils. Happily, you can do that without diminishing your enjoyment of vaping or affecting relief of your cravings.
