Why can the colour of e-liquid vary from bottle to bottle?
E-liquids can vary in colour, even when their flavour names are similar. There are several reasons why their colours vary.
The Impact of Colourings
Some manufacturers choose to add colouring to their products to create an attractive or memorable juice. For example, the legendary Heisenberg by Vampire Vape which is blue, just like the product produced by chemist Walter White in the awesome TV show Breaking Bad. Different batches of colouring may vary slightly in hue, producing e-liquids that also vary in colour. Manufacturers may switch colouring supplier or slighting amend their recipes.
Nicotine and Colour Change
A great many liquids, however, are either clear or display a slight yellow or brown colour. You will often find that the stronger the nicotine strength of an e-liquid, the darker the shade of the juice will be as nicotine can be slightly coloured.
Nicotine tends to darken over time or when exposed to the air due to the process of oxidation. In other words, e-liquids can deepen in hue as they age.
Bottles, Transparency and Light
Bottle colour, bottle transparency, and lighting conditions can also make e-liquids appear to be different in colour. Bottles may have come from different batches or even from different manufacturers.
In Summary
You may find that examples of the same flavour from the same collection with the same nicotine strength will vary in colour as they may be from different batches and so could have been steeping for longer or made using different batches of ingredients.
Colour change is nothing to worry about. So long as you vape your juice within a year of purchasing it, the taste should not have been impacted by the oxidation of nicotine. There are no safety implications regarding colour changes to e-liquids.
