What Does It Mean To Break In A Vape Coil?

If you have been vaping for some time, you may have noticed that you don't experience optimal flavour until you have topped up your tank a couple of times after changing your coil. This short amount of time prior to the finest flavour developing is often referred to as the coil break in period.

So, what's the right way to break in a new coil?

Always prime your coil

Vape coils, especially low resistance coils, heat to high temperatures. This is great for flavour and vapour production. But vape coils have cotton wicks that easily burn if not completely saturated with e-liquid.

It is impossible to repair burnt wicking. Once a wick has burned, the coil must be discarded. For this reason, it is vital to prime your coils before vaping.

Once you have installed a new coil, fill your tank with e-liquid and then leave it for a few minutes before vaping. This will give the wicking the time it needs to absorb sufficient e-liquid.

When the coil has been primed, if your device features variable wattage or temperature control mode, set your device to a lower power level or temperature than that at which you would normally vape.

Take a quick puff and wait several seconds before vaping again. If the coil seems to be working properly, you can start increasing your settings gradually until you reach your usual wattage or temperature.

The break in period

Even if you have primed and installed a new coil correctly, the flavour you experience still won't be perfect until you have drained your vape tank once or twice. Why would that be?

The manufacturers of vaping hardware do not produce the organic cotton wicking that features in the coils. Neither do they produce the heating wires or mesh cores. Manufacturers invest in these components and use them to make vape coils. They assemble vape coils without cleaning the components first. Traces of lubricants and other residues accumulated during the manufacturing process will be present in any new coil.

When you break in a new coil, you are effectively using e-liquid to wash away any residues that are present. In other words, when you vape the first tank of e-liquid, you will be inhaling the residues which will impact the flavour of your e-liquid.

How to avoid the break in period

You can avoid experiencing less than ideal flavour with a new coil. Simply give your coil a quick clean before installing it. Our guide to cleaning coils gives you all the information you need.

After you have cleaned your coils, you will need to leave them to dry for about 24 hours before using them. To prevent the drying process from hampering your vaping routine, you might consider cleaning and drying an entire box of coils before you really need them. Then, when you're ready to discard the coil you're using, you'll have another coil that is clean and ready to go.

Stock up on your vape coils

Don't forget to stock up on your vape coils to ensure that there are no interruptions to your vaping life. The Vapekit range features replacement coils from the leading brands including Aspire, SMOK, Innokin, VooPoo and many more.
