How to Set Up a New Vape Mod and Tank

If you ae new to vaping or have previously used only disposables, you might be wondering how difficult it is to set up a vape mod and tank.

It's really quite easy to set up a rechargeable, refillable device and once you know how, you can take advantage of a wide variety of vaping hardware.

Also known as open systems, rechargeable and refillable vapes enable you to explore the different vaping styles and to sample a wonderful array of e liquids. In any case, with a ban on disposables just around the corner, now is the right time to expand your vaping horizons.

So, what can you expect from your new device and how do you set it up?

How to find your perfect vape

The Vapekit range features an impressive collection of diverse hardware including the best cheap vapes and the best box mods from the leading brands. You will discover the latest mods and starter kits from Aspire, Innokin, SMOK, VooPoo, Vaporesso and more. Why not take a look at your options to identify the hardware with which to continue your vaping journey?

What's in the box?

You could choose to purchase your mod and tank separately but when you are new to vaping it is best to invest in a starter kit. This will give you your mod, a compatible tank and additional accessories such as spare coils.

There are two types of open system vapes, those with built-in batteries and those that are powered by removeable batteries. Removeable batteries would be additional purchases. For the information you need to choose the best type of device for your needs, please consult our useful guide.

How do you get started?

When you receive your new vape, you should begin by removing the mod, tank and any accessories from the box. The tank will probably have a coil preinstalled and so you shouldn't need to worry about fitting the coil. Each vape will work in a slightly different way and have its own unique set of features. But here's a guide to what you can expect and how to start using your equipment:

Charging your battery or batteries

If your device features a built-in battery, it will probably be supplied witj sufficient charge to enable you to vape, but it would be advisable to fully charge it. Use the supplied USB charging cable to connect your device to any computer.

Should your device be powered by removeable batteries, you will need to invest in the batteries and a suitable charger. Charge the batteries and then open the battery door on your mod and install the batteries.

Most vapes have LED battery charge indicator lights or a screen that displays your charging status.

Exploring your tank

While your battery charges, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the operation of your vape tank. In most cases, you can access a tank's coil by unscrewing the tank's bottom hardware and then simply pulling out the coil. Most coils are installed via a simple push-fit system. If there is no coil installed, you must fit a coil before proceeding.

Fill your tank

Ensure that you have invested in e liquid that is suitable for your chosen vape tank and the installed coil. High resistance coils (those with a resistance of 1.0 ohm or greater) require e liquids that are at least 60PG. Coils with resistances of 0.6ohm – 0.9 ohm are best suited to 50:50 e liquids while those with resistances of 0.5ohm or less require e liquids that are at least 60VG. If your device boasts a variable wattage function, note the recommended wattage etched into the side of the coil as this information will prove useful when adjusting your settings.

Consult the instructions for your device to locate the filling port. You will need to open the port or unscrew your mouthpiece to access it. Fill your tank with e liquid and then leave it for a few minutes to ensure that the wicking in the coil has absorbed sufficient juice. This process is known as priming.

Coil wicking will burn if you use the tank before the wick is completely wet with e liquid. Burnt wicking will mean you will need to replace the coil.

Assemble your device and start vaping

Connect your tank to your mod. The tank will simply screw onto the mod. If the output of your mod can be adjusted, use the buttons to set your mod to the lower end of the wattage range identified on the coil. It is best to take a few puffs at a lower wattage before increasing the output. You can experiment with outputs to discover which delivers the finest flavour or the clouds you are looking for.

If you have chosen a simple vape pen with a single button, there's no need to worry about making wattage adjustments although you may have two or three settings to choose from. You can test run each setting later. Your starter kit will have included coils that work perfectly within your device's power range.

Turn on your device. This will probably involve pressing the fire button a prescribed number of times. Then, press and hold down the fire button and inhale on the mouthpiece. Release the fire button at the end of your puff.

Once you have taken a few puffs, you can experiment by setting different outputs or using the available operating modes to find your coil's sweet spot.

Refilling your tank

You will eventually need to refill your tank with e liquid. How long a tank of juice will last you will depend on the nature of your e liquid, your settings and how frequently you take puffs.

Never allow your tank to run dry as you will risk burning your wicking. To refill your tank, access the filling port and squeeze e liquid into it. If you have changed flavours, it is advisable to clean your tank and change your coil before topping up with the new juice.

When should you change your coil?

The lifespan of vape coils varies and will be influenced by how often you puff, the base liquid ratio of your juice and the type of flavour you have chosen. Sweetened flavours can clog coils while intensive vaping or vaping at high temperatures will also shorten the life of any coil.

At some point you will notice that the quality of the flavour you experience has deteriorated or that you can detect a burnt taste. These are both signs that your coil should be replaced. You could choose to install an identical coil to the one you have been using. But if your device is compatible with a range of coils, you could take the opportunity to try something different.
